Yesterday while looking at Necole Bitchie I got an idea about this article. The thought I had was about the global reach of hiphop and black American culture. By culture, I incorporate clothing, music, slang, mentality, and aspirations. Like the whole world thinks like todays young black community, but has no authenticity with it.
For instance, there are people all around the world using "Ni99a" and have no idea of the true meaning. Hiphop icons have endorsments over seas and sell plenty of records their too. Did you know that the majority of rap albums sold in the U.S. are bought by teenage white kids. Unless we really like someone, we're downloading that album, they are buying them. And it's not just the world's youth that love what we do, but even other people in the industry. Don't believe me? Look at the video below; a rock group named Framing Hanley does their own rendition of Lil' Wayne's Lollipop. The surprising thing is its good, maybe thats just me being open minded, I don't know.
Framing Hanley- Lollipop (yes that lollipop)
This brings me to my next thought, Are black people open minded? I know I am, I do plenty of things that most people woudn't try but is` everyone like that. I listen to pop, rock, and classical music along with my hiphop, reggae, jazz, and r&b. What I realize is that while most of the world is adapting to us we are not open to them. However, the very hiphop artist that we idolize are extremely open to other things. Look at Kanye, Pharelle, Lupe, and Wayne. All of them embrasing typicaly white art forms like pop, punk, and rock. Now punk and rock is interesting, besides the crazy yelling you have a pretty good rap song with less base. If you don't agree, look at the video below. It's Travis Barker of Blink 182 playing drums to Crank Dat and I wish Soulja Boy would do this rendition live because it makes the song better. So who are you and what do you do and are you open to something else?

Travis Barker is my favorite musician. That was great! He has a video like this with The Game, doing Dope Boys. It's nice also. Good music is good music. I play drums and guitar, but listen to anything. I have friends that write, perform and produce hip-hop (on a smaller level) but the most fun is laying down live drum beats for them to rap over. I like that better than a drum machine any day. Rap-rock got a bad reputation in the late 90's because it was done all wrong. Rock out to a hip-hop song, don't rap to a rock song! That's why Travis can play anything!
Travis is so sexy... I embrace a lot of diff things... I listen to Spanish music, although I can't understand a word they are saying. I remember, back in the day, I was BOPPIN HARD to Bobby Digital. All my friends though I was nuts and would tease me endlessly. I have cds from Fall Out Boy, Maroon 5, and Lily Allen, etc. I love new things.. but I agree, a lot of black folks aren't like that. I tend to turn my cd down in my car when listening to one of these artists... I don't want my people judging me.
I LOVE Travis Barker... he is one talented mutha(shut yo mouth!). One of my greatest pet peeves is black people who won't experience something because it's "white folks sh!t". The older I've gotten, the more I've learned to appreciate that good music is just good music. And I LOVE how artists like Kanye and N.E.R.D. incorporate other genres into their music... it makes for a more interesting and richer musical experience. And Santogold is my hero(ine) for her musical style.
And Nikki, play your music shamelessly!! I'll play my Jamie Cullum and Kimya Dawson and Amy Winehouse just as loud as I play Q-Tip. It's people like us who have to be the ones to break those stereotypes!
BTW, one of my favorite covers... Jamie Cullum doing Pharrell's "Frontin": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxe_8JS-nUM

@Ane: I'm gonna start... I'm a grown a** woman (fresh 28!) I should not be worried about what these fools think of me.
I think the depth in a person's experiences can show alot about who they are. This is within reason, a person who blatantly can't afford to have experiences has no choice. But I will never live in a box, to fly for the position.

most of black america is definitely not as open. i grew up listening to annie lennox, peter gabriel, counting crows, red hot chili peppers, linkin park, and the list goes on. and i still love my hiphop and rap... yes there is a difference. when this comes up in coversation with other african americans, i'm looked at like i'm wierd, which is cool with me, i strive for it. but we definitely need to be more open as a people. you relate more to others and it provides a more dynamic view of the world and its experiences.
I do think that we as a people are not very embracing of other peoples and cultures. Interracial dating comes to mind.
Its not understandable ... but I guess we feel like we must still look inwards for power.
But on a more superficial note ... being Black is still hot sh*t ... we don't really have any reason to branch out.
Damn the rock version of Crank Dat is the biz. But if you think that's hot, you should find the rock version of Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal"....UNBELIEVABLE.
Ok, I got the name of the group. They are called Alient Ant Farm. Here's the link:

SBM - Im with you on that. Even tho I can't stand Paul Mooney and his opportunistic comedy styling, he's right... "Everybody wants to be a n*gga, but nobody wants to be a n*gga."
This Lollipop remake is FIRE! Rock is getting some burn nowadays...Cash Money signed a rock guy named Kevin Rudolf and he has songs with Wayne, Nas and Rick Ross.
I happen to LOVE the Travis Barker remix of Soulja Boy. I actually like it way better than the original version. It is always on blast in my SUV. I start to the white-people headbanger's thing at the red light and people probably think I am crazy.
